Winter is getting ready to level its annual assault on our homes, and garages usually take a fair share of the brunt of cold weather and frozen precipitation. Whether it’s from more items being stored in garages or more outside elements coming in, garages require routine maintenance throughout winter, and we wanted to pass on a few tips.
If you haven’t sealed your garage floor, do it ASAP. Otherwise, the melting snow and salt your car tracks in will do a lot of damage. You may even consider sweeping water and debris out after major snow events.
Be very careful when you’re moving heavy equipment and items in an out of your garage especially around your garage door tracks. Damaging these tracks can foul the operation of your door.
Monitor the weather stripping at the bottom of your door. Damaged weather stripping is a good way for cold to get into your home raising your energy costs. Salt poses a threat to it as do rodents trying to chew through it to get into a warm place.
